In Canada, employees have the right to receive written notice before their employment is terminated. This table outlines the minimum statutory notice periods employers must provide across provinces.

While these periods represent the minimum, employers can choose to offer more notice.

Alberta

Less than 3 months: None;
3 months to 2 years: 1 week;
2 to 4 years: 2 weeks;
4 to 6 years: 4 weeks;
6 to 8 years: 5 weeks;
8 to 10 years: 6 weeks;
10+ years: 8 weeks

British Columbia

Less than 3 months: None;
3 to 12 months: 1 week;
1 to 3 years: 2 weeks;
3 years: 3 weeks;
Over 3 years: 1 additional week per year up to 8 weeks

Manitoba

Less than 30 days: None;
30 days to 1 year: 1 week;
1 to 3 years: 2 weeks;
3 to 5 years: 4 weeks;
5 to 10 years: 6 weeks;
10+ years: 8 weeks

New Brunswick

6 months to 5 years: 2 weeks;
More than 5 years: 4 weeks

Newfoundland and Labrador

Less than 3 months: None;
3 months to 2 years: 1 Week;
2 to 5 years: 2 Weeks;
5 to 10 years: 3 Weeks;
10 to 15 years: 4 Weeks;
15+ years: 6 Weeks

Nova Scotia

Less than 3 months: None;
3 months to 2 years: 1 week;
2 to 5 years: 2 weeks;
5 to 10 years: 4 weeks;
Over 10 years: 8 weeks

Ontario

Less than 3 months: None;
3 months to 1 year: 1 week;
1 to 3 years: 2 weeks;

Less than 6 months: None;
6 months to 5 years: 2 weeks;
